Sandra asks…

can a pc work without internet explorer and just use mozilla firefox?

barry0912 answers:

My PC doesn’t have Internet Explorer, or Windows Explorer, and I’ll bet it’s better than your PC 😉

It looks like just about everyone else on here is telling lies – I didn’t remove Internet Explorer, I never had it. My PC works without Internet Explorer – but I don’t JUST use Mozilla Firefox. I do use it a lot, and love that I can have ‘profiles’ set up.

I use Mozilla Firefox, I use Opera, I use Epiphany (lightweight gecko browser, same engine firefox but lighter browser) and Midori (webkit, like Safari) – and also I like Seamonkey, which is an ‘internet suite’ unlike browsers – it includes many features, like an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools

Your question sounds a little like people who think that there is either Mac, which must only run Mac OSX, or PC which (in the Evangelist Microsoft campaign, must only run Microsoft).

Microsoft also launched campaigns to brainwash people, they pay many people to post on forums, and sites like Answers, in order to control thinking. The only reason they believe that Vista failed is that the people talked it down in forums.

Windows 7 is amazingly more successful – but in the words of an ex-Microsoft Evangelist (one of the guys who ran the campaign) “lets be real, Windows 7 is just Vista with a polished UI tweaks and *much* better marketing.”

Microsoft published on their own site, a complaint (relating to Internet Explorer not working with many internet sites because (in their words) the developers couldn’t take a few minutes to set up their site properley. Those sites included Windows Live, MSN sites, and included no less than 8 Microsoft hosted sites!!! Amazing!!! Yet news like this generally gets hidden, people generally get evangelistic about whatever Operating System they’re running (even though they might have many problems and hate it… Better the devil you know?)

If you have a PC and want to get away from the crap, then find something better, something free, or just an alternative for internet.

I use XP, it runs games on my system and has ACDSee Pro2, and several games. I disabled internet, and removed all of the security junk software also… So it now runs well.

When I am doing anything else (other than downloading 300 5MP pictures and adjusting them from my camera – and playing games) I boot to another Operating System.

Right now, I’m trying out Crunchbang Linux – wow, it’s amazingly fast after XP, but it’s a little basic. I prefer ubuntu for everything else. It’s great for net, it’s great for Office (free) it’s great for photo editing, making DVD’s, editing music, creating CD’s, well – whatever you wanna do, it’s great.

Sure, use Mozilla and avoid Internet Explorer. Better still, avoid Microsoft and their unfair business practices altogether. I’m amazed that any Christian can justify working to support such a Corporation!!! Show signs of charity for a few African Schools – when they could really give Free PC’s with really free software – and Ubuntu is better for kids than Windows ever could be!

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Jobs

Steven asks…

Any real jobs out there my dad can do from home on Google or Yahoo?

I see these kind of jobs advertised sometimes but they seem bogus? He’s okay at home but doesn’t get around much anymore. Still sharp and etc. Needs extra cash.

barry0912 answers:

Perhaps the majority of money making offers on the internet are scams of some sort. Most people who try to make money on the internet fail, the worst may be the surveys, paid to click, shopping rewards thing that I doubt anyone can make a living from. That one fake new blog showing the mom making some $10k part time, used to say posting links for Google before they sued 50 such sites.

If you can write you can find web site article writing freelance jobs that mostly pay $3 to $5 though a writer qualified to write for as an expert for major sites might get more like $10 – $75 per 500 word article.

Someone with unique knowledge might be able to write a blog that eventually, it really has to be an exceptional site with regular new additions to get search engine ranking and enough visitors to earn a bit of advertising revenue. One can start with a free blog host like Blogger.com

A small percentage of people who try affiliate marketing actually succeed, some do quite well, having web development knowledge, sales experience and good management skills would have a better chance.
Many Internet Marketing rookies hang out at Warriorforum.com member written WSO tutorials sell for relatively little money.

I am always suggesting the one looks into freelance marketplace sites as a way to earn money more immediately, these include freelancer.com and odesk.com, while more geared for technicians, you also can find writing projects and simple seo tasks, while there is worldwide competition, a native English writer has a big advantage. One of the easiest to get into is freelancer.com it’s also prone to having lower paying projects and wild west lawlessness, older established sites like elance or vWorker have tighter standards and may have membership fees to keep out the riffraff.

There are also micro task sites that pay small change for a few minutes work, popular with 3rd world countries, some in the U.S. Do them instead of crossword puzzles, the original was created by Amazon, the online store to ‘automate’ tasks a computer couldn’t do, like pick the better of 2 pictures, they named mturk.com after the 18th century Mechanical Turk chess playing machine that had a man hidden inside, shortTask and microworkers have similar micro tasks, some individual jobs are a bit shady, like signing up for product trials, doing surveys, but you get to choose which tasks to perform.

Susan asks…

Where can I get objective advice on an Internet advertising model?

I’m trying to find a qualified resource to provide some generic answers concerning a new Internet advertising model. Basically this model will offer potential advertisers a low monthly volume of extremely high-quality leads. The questions I have relate to a) pricing and b) marketing this new service. So, where do I look for this advice?

barry0912 answers:

I find questions that require a “deeper” answer get better answers in the Q&A of LinkedIn. Their Q&A attracts a lot of professionals in the field of marketing, advertising and in this case, direct marketing.

My suggestion is to look at some examples of this type of business model. Franchising brokers and directories, for example, offer this type of business model where the advertisers (franchisers) post their info for a fee and then they pay based on the leads that they get

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Blog

William asks…

What can you recommend to make an internet cafe work?

I want to start an internet cafe near a university. What can you suggest to make the business work?

barry0912 answers:

Firstly, if you have no experience in the internet cafe business, I’d advise that you work in one for the next six months or so doing everything from busing tables and washing dishes to waiting tables and cooking if they’ll allow you back there and if you have the skills. This will give you some of the work experience that you’ll need to understand and run an internet cafe profitably.

If this is your first business venture, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE. Ask for someone who has a background in restaurants and internet cafes and they’ll try their best to match you with the right counselor.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting an internet cafe and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll get them to find out and want to come to your fabulous internet cafe.

The location is important but doesn’t make it successful. To prove that all you have to do is walk down a street in your town where there are several nice restaurants all in a row and you’ll find one or two that are empty while the others are very busy. It has to do with menu, ambiance, and your reputation at the beginning and over time.

You also have to have food handling licenses, the right zoning, the right city and county licenses and permits and you have to be skilled at negotiating with your landlord about who’ll stand the cost of the build-out or the changes to the premises to make it ready for your look and feel.

You also have to worry about the normal business planning and management issues related to starting up any business.
Take a look and read some of the articles at:
http://www.ychange.com/small-business-consulting-articles.html
especially the ones about a business plan and starting a business. Also try their Blog and their Bulletin Board.
Hope this helped.

Donna asks…

How can I market my web development company?

I work for a 13 man web development company in the Midwest. I was recently moved into marketing under an inept manager. She withholds information and is not a team player. I love the company and the rest of the people I work with and would like to be an asset to the company. I don’t have a lot of experience in marketing… What can I do to drum up business?

Right now I pretty much just attend Chamber of commerce functions and try to utilize my personal network.

barry0912 answers:

There’s a whole bunch of methods you can use. To utilize your network is a good idea. You could create a linkedin.com profile for example, add people there, create on Linkedin a profile of your company. The same thing with Facebook. Also a company corporate blog is a nice idea.

If you need to execute an Internet marketing (SEO) campaign, my company could help you with it – http://www.webtexsolutions.com/
