Your Questions About Internet Marketing Degree

Donna asks…

Business School Chances?

So I’m a 24-year-old male looking to pursue an MBA within the next few years. By the time I enter B-School I’ll have about 2.5 years of work experience in the Internet Marketing industry.

I have a BA degree in Business Administration with a Marketing focus in Washington State. My undergrad total GPA is about 2.95, and my upper-division is slightly higher, probably about 3.2, and probably more like 3.5 in my senior year.

My question is, all things considered: GMAT scores, recommendations, essays, interview, etc., what would you say I need to pull off in terms of these to-be-done items (listed above) to better my chances at a high-ranking MBA program like NYU or Berkeley. I know even with an 800 GMAT the chances wouldn’t be great cuz of my GPA, but I am a very gifted writer and I know I can write great essays and get good recommendations.

I guess what Im looking for is, given my GPA and work experience, what score on the GMAT do you think I’d need to achieve in order to have a good chance at business school, either a top one or NOT a top one. I just don’t want to start studying my ass off for the GMAT and not get into a single school after wasting money.

Do I have a chance at ANY business school?

barry0912 answers:

Of course you do. But do your research like I did. Right now, I’m going through the b-school application cycle and luckily, I have a close source who gave me a few pointers. If you read through Business Week online forums, gmatclub.com forums, or accepted.com, you’ll find a wealth of information. Business Week also has chat transcripts with the admissions officers of quite a few major US and European b-schools. (Check the Admissions Q&A link to find them.)

First and foremost, what I’ve gleaned from previous MBAs is that work experience and GMAT are really key. If you compare school websites, US schools tend to have at least 4 years and European schools at least 5-6 years. The schools want professionals who have some diverse stories to contribute to their classmates’ learning experiences. Thus, perhaps wait until you already have 3 years of work experience under your belt before you decide to apply. Now, with the GMAT, you can focus on this at any time. Aim for high (at least 700) and try to make your quantitative and verbal scores balanced. A high GMAT offsets a low GPA in most cases. (In the sense that the admissions committee will not doubt your ability to handle rigorous quantitative courses.) These are both doable items.

Then, when you’re ready, secure your writers early. Seriously, map out a timeline or Excel spreadsheet of 6-7 schools you plan to apply to and indicate when you plan to have drafts of your essays ready to deliver to your recommenders. This is so they can have a better sense of who you are as a candidate and what your post-MBA goals are, making your letter all the more customized. Keep in mind that essays need to be focused on your experiences, your fit with the school, and your realistic post-MBA goals. Make sure you research the schools thoroughly before you craft your essays. Writing beautifully does you no good if the reader can’t get a sense of your personality through your words.

Best of luck!

Mary asks…

How do you know what career is right for you?

Is there some kind of career apptitude test that is free to take on the internet? I’m the most indecisive person and its hard for me to choose a career. I’m about to gradute college with a Business degree, and I feel like I wasted my time. I live in a small town(no I can’t move)and I can’t do nothing with that degree here. I was thinking about going into the Paralegal program. I like researching, reading, writing, marketing, law, and helping people. I know that’s a lot. Can someone please help? NO JERK ANSWERS

barry0912 answers:

Living in a small town would make it hard to use that type of degree. But if i were you i would go for the Paralegal program. It might seem like a lot but with that kind of degree living in a small town would be the best thing to do.

There are many repositories to pick from most of which for the most part arewithout charge (wiki). But if you really want the real pledge, you will probably end up paying for it. —but I calculate you get what you pay for. Especially when you are dealing with an industry expert.
