i’ve looked for a job all over the internet, but i have a bachelors and all the jobs are useless, now what?

hi, i’ve been to monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs, and craigslist and no luck pertaining to me having a bachelors, specifically a bachelors in business, specializing in marketing IMC. i’ve been looking about two to three times a week and none of the jobs are good — they’re all implicitly shady, i just feel it. what can i do to find a job without looking at these sites? thank you 🙂
sorry for my brief and unclear explanation of my experience. by shady, i mean, just about all of the company profiles seem to primarily utilize cold calling, door to door, or dirty sales techniques to exist. i got a degree so i don’t have to do that. i have 2 years experience in customer service, but that’s all. i’m 23 and just graduated a month ago. thanks all 🙂

Get off the internet.

Most people do not find jobs through the job web sites like monster etc.

I work as an adjuster. I have marketing reps with vendors (restoration companies, rental companies etc) that we use visit me often. There job is to try to get me to use them – instead of the other guy.

Sure, they post ads on the internet and in industry publications.

But they get my business, because they come into my office an meet me. They bring managment to my office to meet me. So that if I have a problem – I know the manager and can call them to get the problem solved. They get my business, not because of the internet ads, but because of the interpersonal relationship they take the time to develop with me.

All job hunting is …..is marketing. But instead of selling a service you are selling yourself.

So, if you are selling yourself… Why would you hang everything on the internet – moster.com, careerbuilder.com. I don’t have marketing degree….but I doubt a sucessful marketing strategy relies only on 1 soure.

So, keep searching the internet and the sunday paper. Also search state and federal goverment web sites. Many communities have their own career finder website for local companies- search those.

Go meet and register with every employment agency you can. You can get some temp work – so the money will help. And many companies do not post job openings– but use temp agencies to screen potential employees.

Join the local Jaycees. Get to know people. Let them know you are looking for a job. Many people find jobs b/c they knew someone at the company. Develop a network.

Get involved in volunteer work. You may meet someone at that volunteer fundraiser that is a potential job connection. And, since you are not working – you have the time and it helps to build your resume. Pick something you are interested in and get involved. The only thing it will cost you is time– and you have that.

Let every friend and family member know you are looking for a job and are open to anything.

Don’t restrict yourself. There are way more marketing majors than marketing jobs. So, be willing to look at any job you qualify for. You may find that you end up in an industry that you never thought you would be in – but love.

Start sending out resumes and cover letters. Make sure there are no mistakes in either. They must be perfect or they get tossed.

Make sure to have a resume that applies to the job you are looking for. Don’t send a resume to an insurance company to apply for an adjusters position with an objective that says you are looking for a job in the marketing field.

Be sure that your resume stresses the experience/education that applies to that job.
An insurance company will want to see a 4 year college degree and good customer service skills, time management, organization. So, make sure your resume reflects those values. But this may not be what a marketing position wants — they may be more interested in your education.

If you don’t have experience in a specific field, you usually need a contact in the company. So really “network”. If the company has an opening, the fact that an employee recommended you will greatly increase your chance of getting an interview. It won’t get you the job (you still have to do that in the interview) but it will go a long way to getting you the interview.

I have a history degree. When I got out of college, I went to work as an assistant manager in a retail store. I had a family connection. I did that for a year and got some good customer service experince and a good dose of “grow up”. I then got on with a major insurance company. (Again, I had another family member that worked with that company in a different state). I was hired to work as an insurance adjuster.

I have been working as an adjuster for 12 years now. I’m in a profession where I can take care of myself and support a family. When I was in college – could I have told you this would be the profession I’d be in? No.

So, be open to any opportunity that presents itself and start developing and working your network. A company is not going to just show up at your door begging you to work for them…..you have to work hard and find that job.

Piano Store Marketing Strategy?

I have invested in a Piano Store recently and was wondering what would be the best means of communicating with my target customer i.e. younger parents with kids in the range 5-10.

Does anybody have any experience with creating a Marketing Plan or Strategy for a Piano Store?

If I was to tie-in with a Brand or product; what would be the best options?

Although it predates the record album as an entertainment source, I guess your business has not entirely vanished yet, but it certainly has to be marketed differently than 20 years ago, I assume the manufacturers touch on traditional family values, as well as the decorative value of a traditional instrument.

One potential method to reach a small number of local prospects may be with paid Facebook advertisements, their demographic targeting is quite powerful, you can have ads only appear for married women between 25 and 40 who live in cities in close proximity to your location, there may be an “interest” like piano playing you may be able to target as well, they show you the potential reach of members a given ad setting would have, you could have such ads send people to a free Facebook business page.
While on the subject of internet resources you for sure need to have (and probably already do) a free Google Places page, they may provide a generic listing automatically, but you need to claim it and improve the content with more lengthy text, photos an potentially even video.

Sorry I m not more in touch with how kids are introduced to e piano these days, perhaps you can be a sponsor of some school events for the publicity and music evangelist opportunities, there are some cities (where the weather is friendly) that have old pianos in public places setup by some non profits.

Start with this process:

Come up with 3 – 5 objectives that you would like your new marketing plan to achieve and when you would like to achieve them (3 months, 6 months, 1 year)
Are they prone to take several days to make a purchase?
Do they only shop during the weekdays?
Do they own computers in their homes?
Do they have access to the Internet while at work and at home?
Do they make purchases for themselves? For their family? For their friends?
Do some demographic research to discover who your customer base is and how (or if) they make purchases online

Sure they relate. Company’s use online Marketing to either get you to buy online or to buy over the phone. For instance if I was working for a Mortgage Company, I would advertise low rates. I would than post these rates with a link that includes the name of my mortgage company on common real estate websites. On my own company website I might include a free quote analysis but than post a 1-800 number. After you do the free online quote you would probably have questions. So you call the 1-800 number and talk to a mortgage officer. This potential sale became possible because I had posted a Marketing link on a website with the target demographic.

Different internet service?

I have AT&T DSL internet service. I live in a household of three. Two with laptops, and me with my desktop and PS3. I am sick of this internet service!!! Every time even one person starts surfing the web, my computer starts running so slow!!! The internet starts going in and out of service at the most random times. And I usually have to wait until late night in the AM when everyone else is sleeping just to get a HALF decent connection. Whenever I want to play my PS3 I can’t because of the others are on their devices and it causes so much lag to the point where I eventually get signed out of the network and I can’t even connect back to the servers. I would LOVE to switch back to Comcast (even though the customer support sucks! it would definitely be worth it over my current service provider) but I live in an apartment building that is under contract with DirectTV (which also sucks) so there is no other possible way to get Comcast because we would need to have a cable connection by Comcast even if we didn’t want cable tv itself. So pretty much we can only get Comcast unless we move, which is out of the question! So are there any other internet service providers that do not need a cable connection that are faster and more reliable than AT&T??? Or can anyone please tell me what I can do to make my internet connection faster on my PS3 at least? Thanks in advance guys!
Also, my desktop and PS3 are on wired connections. And the two laptops are obviously wireless. See the problem here? lol

DSL is usually the cheapest broadband option, albeit the slowest.

DSL – DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a form of broadband Internet that is transmitted over standard twisted pair copper telephone lines. Standard DSL is rapidly being replaced by newer, faster technologies. DOCSIS 3.0 cable Internet has speeds up to a blazing 305 Mbps in certain areas. Fiber optic ADSL2+ and VDSL products are offered in excess of 100 Mbps.

As far as wireless service go, There are some fast 4 G wireless services available. However you’ll not want wireless for your application for two reasons.

1.) Fair Usage Limits.

Most Internet providers impose limits on the amount of data you can download before they charge you overage fees or throttle your Internet speed to a crawl.

“Unlimited Internet” is a term often used to market Internet services.

Very seldom does it actually mean unlimited. What the providers do is add what is known as a “Fair Usage Policy” you’ll find it in the small print of the contracts. The effect is that you are either throttled to a crawl or charged extra for monthly bandwidth that exceeds the providers predetermined limit.

The worst are the cellular mobile broadband providers with under 5 GB per month, Satellite Internet is a close second with some providers throttling after 200 MB per day. Most cable and DSL providers allow 100-250 GB per month.

2.) Latency (Ping Time)

Online gaming lag is usually caused by two things, latency and upload speed.

You can check these on a speed testing site. Http://speedtest.net

Latency is the delay (ping time) in milliseconds that it takes the signal to travel to the server and back. The lower the number the better, but you’ll definitely want a ping time of under 150 ms or you’ll have major problems.

Upload speed also plays a factor in updating your player position data to the gaming server. Slow upload speeds can cause your online game to lag. The faster the better, but at least 0.5 Mbps would be my minimum recommendation.

Another factor that comes into play is if you are using a wired (Ethernet) or wireless connection to your PC or gaming console.

Unfortunately any network without cables will have latency issues. This includes wireless mobile broadband and satellite systems, but also can be caused by wireless router connections.

By nature, interference in wireless systems causes problems with smooth, consistent speeds.

A lot will depend on what Internet providers are available in your specific area and what levels of service they offer in that location.

To compare your local competitors, go to a ISP comparison site that lets you input your address, http://isp1.us/find/ and compare the pricing and terms of the offers that are available in your area.

The physical address is needed because some services, particularly DSL, are very distance sensitive. For example you might be able to get a specific level of service while your next door neighbor can’t.

You’ll want to pick the fastest plan that fits your budget. In some areas this can be 300 Mbps+. But these high end broadband plans are expensive. You may find that something in the 5 to 50 Mbps range might satisfy your needs at a much lower cost.
