She moved from Massachusetts to New York about 3 months and she just finished collecting unemployment benefit (money and health insurance) in Massachusetts. Helen asks…

Anyone know of low cost health insurance in NJ area?

I need a low cost health insurance and I am unemployed right now. I need it for college and my college is not part of a plan since its a community college. I was looking at the sites and quotes, but they all seem to be more than $250 which is too much. Can anyone help me out?

barry0912 answers:

NY and NJ have laws that limit the ability of insurance companies to charge different prices for each customer, so everyone in those states has to pay a high price. In other words, insurance companies need to sell high cost insurance to some customers, and NJ and NY say that if they sold low cost to anyone, then they would have to sell low cost to everyone, so they do not sell low cost to anyone.

The way to get low cost insurance is to move to a state where it is legal for insurance companies to give low cost insurance to some customers and high cost insurance to other customers.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Jobs

Lizzie asks…

Is there really any money in this field of work?

I have been contemplating going back to school for web site design and internet marketing. I just wonder if there is really money in the field? Is anyone out there making a real living off of it and is it better to go it alone (opening my own design solution business) or to take a job with an established company?

barry0912 answers:

You listed two separate careers – web designing and web marketing.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in web marketing, I would strongly suggest getting a professional qualification at one of better web marketing programs in the country (somewhere like the University of Oregon – http://lcb.uoregon.edu/departments/mktg/index.html ) or possibly even an MBA in marketing. There is really not much money to be made in web marketing as a freelance or independent web marketer, unless you really establish yourself as an expert in the field by getting a top notch expert blog and building a high profile portfolio. However, if you get the right qualifications, you can posibly get a job at one of the big SEO or web marketing firms, which tend to be located either in the Boston/New York area, or in Silicon Valley. Salaries begin low ($30 to 40K), and the work is typically “grunt” work. However, you can build up to a six figure incombe, but that will take you time.

As regards being a web designer, the opportunities for freelance or independent work are much better, and you may not even need to go to school. The CIW qualifcation (http://www.ciwcertified.com/ ) is more than enough, and there are many online web design degrees or certificates which are available (check out http://www.worldwidelearn.com/ for some options). If you are going to set yourself up as an independent web designer, you are going to need to become well trained in several programming languages, get familiar with video and phot editing, and possibly even take a graphics art course or two from your local community college. As regards earning potential, that is going to be limited at the moment in the current economic climate, as businesses cut back on their marketing budgets (under which websites usually fall). However, you can make a reasonable income from web design on your own ($30 – 35K within the first year, if you are good), although you really have to concentrate on promoting yourself and establishing your credibility. Jobs with a web design firm are highly competitive, and are also under pressure from the economy. Firms normally hire on the basis of past experience with web design (so you might want to look at hunting for a job after you have had some experience out on your own and built up a portfolio), and usually want some sort of degree or qualification (although this differs from firm to firm). Salaries differ, but usually fall into the $45 to 55K range, with the top designers getting double or more than that.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Degree

Michael asks…

What’s a good IT certification to get?

I currently have a two-year degree in Internet Marketing but I am looking to branch out my qualifications a bit to make myself more marketable to potential employers. While I haven’t given up on the idea of obtaining an ‘internet marketing‘ related job, I was specifically thinking of racking up a few industry certifications to try and get more into IT and the like. Currently I am thinking of Cisco CCNA and possibly MCSA. I am wondering however if these might be worth it and/or if there are other ones I should be looking at right now.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

barry0912 answers:

As someone who not only hires Network admins , computer tech and the like . Let me if I may give you a bit of advice . Seriously 90% of the kids that send resumes to me having CCNA and the like do not last the 90 day probation period . Why you ask . Simple they have all the class room training in the world but lack that hands on experience or the ability to think on their feet . Yahoo answers is a great place to see this . 99% of the answers I see given here from so called experts are so off base My gut ends up hurting from reading them and laughing . In short get the experience and don’t just rely on certifications if you want to last in the IT field

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Association

Chris asks…

What do you think about studying online with a University?

I have been to a traditional college for about 2 years and got my Associates in Business Administration there. I moved far away overseas and decided to study with a popular US University Online, because it offered me the flexibility and the luxury of holding a BA in Marketing in a bit longer than 2 years with transfered credits. Seriously, though, if you are an employer or student, professor – what is your opinion on this and why? The school says that it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (ncahlc.org). Most of the business degrees are accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. My classes are super duper expensive, I do learn a great deal of theory, but have nearly no experience in my desired field of study. They focus on writing weekly papers, simulations, and team work. Internet or online communication. I am currently seeking an internship. But, what is your opinion and why? I am also trying to figure out if I should complete a Master’s with this University as well.

The only person who can tell you if you’ll definitely get a job with this resume is the person who sees it and hires you.

Personally, I think your resume is too wordy. Most HR people who have to read a bunch of resumes all the time are looking for *A Stand Out* (in the crowd) type of person. Put it on a quick diet and only put in the best, most pertinent information necessary. Good Luck!

Cheers!
